KEON Webster, a 22-year-old serving member of the Guyana Prison Service, was on Wednesday remanded to prison for attempting to smuggle cannabis into the Camp Street Prison.

Webster, of West Coast Berbice, appeared before Principal Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrates Court and pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Particulars of the charge allege that, on June 14, 2019 at the Camp Street Prison, Webster had 120 grammes of cannabis in his possession for the purpose of trafficking. Webster was represented by attorney Maxwell McKay.

McKay, during an application for bail, told the court that his client had no knowledge of the drug and how it got into a haversack he was carrying.

Police Prosecutor Ceon Blackman told the court that Webster was searched at the prison as is customary; the drug was found concealed in his haversack and when questioned, Webster said that it belonged to his sister.

The prosecutor strongly objected to Webster being granted bail, citing the seriousness of the offence and the penalty it attracts.

Magistrate McGusty upheld the prosecutor’s objection and remanded Webster to prison until July 10, 2019.
