Alleged wife abductor remanded

DAYS after he allegedly dragged his wife from a neighbour’s house where she had gone to seek refuge, Martin Baker appeared before Magistrate Alex Moore at the Albion Magistrate’s Court, where he faced charges of abduction, malicious damage to property, common assault and threatening behaviour.

The 50-year-old labourer of Plantation Warren, East Coast Berbice, was not required to plea to the charge of abduction, which stated that he abducted Dhanmattie Sumara with intent to cause her to be secretly confined.

He pleaded not guilty to the other charges and was refused bail. Baker is expected to reappear at the New Amsterdam Court on July 12 for report and fixture.

Baker ended up in court after he went to the home of a family friend, Jaipaul Jaimal, where his wife sought refuge from his abuse.  He was refused entry into the house and became upset and kicked down the door. He then proceeded to drag his wife out of the house.
