SENIOR Magistrate, Leron Daly, released a 20-year-old man on $40,000 bail after he was charged for stealing a woman’s cellphone at Avenue of the Republic, Georgetown.
Joshua Gibbs, of Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, was charged on Friday when he appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court; however, he denied the simple larceny charge.
It is alleged that Gibbs stole a Samsung cellphone from Rashana Harris while she was walking along Avenue of the Republic, Georgetown, on Tuesday June 4, 2019. The phone was valued at $45,000.
Magistrate Daly released Gibbs on $40,000 bail which was met with no objection from police prosecutor, Sanj Singh. The matter is adjourned until July 2, 2019.
According to reports, on June 4, 2019, Harris was walking along Avenue of the Republic, playing a game on her cellphone when Gibbs reportedly came up beside her and snatched her cellphone. He reportedly made good of his escape, and the matter was reported to the police.
However, the following day, Harris saw Gibbs under the clock by the Stabroek Market, and alerted a police patrol, who managed to arrest him.
