TWO men were, on Friday, remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate Ann Mc Lennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court for allegedly committing assault causing actual bodily harm, and stealing items amounting to over GYD$1M.
Twenty-five-year-old, Leon Singh, and 26-year-old, John Peters, both residents of Kumaka Waterfront, Mabaruma, North West District, pleaded not guilty to the charge. The charge read that between May 4, 2019 and May, 5, 2019, at the Kumaka Waterfront, they broke and entered the dwelling house of Dwayne Payne and therein stole US$5000, equivalent to GYD$1M; a CCTV recorder, worth GYD$330,000; a quantity of phone cards worth GYD$120,000; and a handbag valued GYD$26,000.

They were also accused of assaulting George Izmet Torrez, thereby causing actual bodily harm on May 8, 2019. They however, also pleaded not guilty to that charge.
The men were represented by Attorney-at-Law, Mark Conway, who made a bail application, noting that they were the breadwinners for their families.
However, prosecutor Tracy-May Gittens objected to bail being granted to the defendants due to the serious nature of the offence and the fact that Singh had a matter of similar nature before the Mabaruma Court.
The magistrate remanded both of the defendants to prison until their next appearance on May 21, 2019.
