ALEKA Persaud followed up her gold medal performance in the 100M butterfly on Saturday evening with bronze medal yesterday when action continued in the 2019 CARIFTA Aquatic Championships, which is ongoing at the Barbados Aquatic Centre in Wildey.
The 12-year-old finished third in the 50M butterfly in a tight race. Her 30.94s was just shy of T&T’s Joy Blackett’s 30.71s and Jamaica’s Giani Francis’s time of 30.86s. Fourth place went to Jamaica’s Saidah Brown, who finished in 31.34s.
As she did when she struck gold on Saturday night, the Guyanese preteen again qualified for the Caribbean and Central American Championships, which is slated for later this year.
Persaud also clocked a third place finish in the 11-12 age division 200M freestyle race yesterday. The youngster registered a time of 2:21.17, which was better than swimmers from Martinique, Barbados (two swimmers), Jamaica and Grenada.
Meanwhile ,Patrice Mahaica settled for fifth in the 100M backstroke after she swam 1:17.06.
On the opening day, Persaud stormed to an almost two second victory in the 100M butterfly final, after clocking a time of 1:08.52.
Six swimmers are competing in the event: four boys and two girls.
