BERBICE Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh on Wednesday ordered that a psychiatric evaluation be done on 47-year-old Cameela Jameer who is accused of killing her mother.

The magistrate made the order after the woman had to be taken to the Fort Wellington Hospital during her first appearance in Court on Wednesday. Shortly after being brought to Court, and while being held in the holding area, the murder accused was heard sobbing loudly and uncontrollably. When she was brought into the Court room by two policewomen, she collapsed before she could be placed in the dock.

The two officers took her back in the holding area and tried to revive her with Limacol. They subsequently brought her back to the dock and placed her there but while there she appeared to be dazed and disoriented. The magistrate did not proceed with the matter. He said ”I don’t know what is wrong with this woman. Take her to the hospital for treatment.” The woman, still in handcuffs, was taken to the Fort Wellington Hospital where she was admitted as a patient under police guard.

She was returned to the Magistrate Court around 1200hrs. On her second appearance, the magistrate rather than reading the charge to her ordered that she be given further medical checks as well as a psychiatric evaluation. She is to return to Court today for the third time, when the charge which has been presented by Police Prosecutor Racquel Mars will be formally read to her.

Her mother, sixty-nine-year-old Joycelyn Jameer was found lying in a pool of blood with a gaping wound to her neck in her home at Tempie Village West Coast Berbice, on April 12. The daughter who lives with her and who made the report initially told police that she was away from home during the day and had returned home in the evening and made the discovery. She later recanted her story and confessed to murdering her mother.
