Mechanic charged for causing death by dangerous driving

LEROY Bhagnauth, on trial for causing death by dangerous driving, was yesterday released on bail by Chief Magistrate Ann Mc Lenann, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

It was alleged that the 29-year-old resident of 182 Kuru Kuru, Soesdyke Highway, on November 18, 2018, at Friendship, East Bank Demerara, drove motor lorry GXX 1162 in a dangerous manner, causing the death of Mohammed Kalamadeen. He denied committing such an offence.

He was represented by Attorney-at-Law, Maxwell Mc kay, who pleaded with the Magistrate for bail to be granted at a reasonable sum.

Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield did not object to bail. He told the court that, on the day in question, the defendant was proceeding south along the eastern lane of the Public Road, while the victim was driving truck GVV 9645 in the opposite direction. The defendant subsequently swerved into the path of Kalamadeen’s truck, resulting in the accident where both parties were injured. Kalamadeen was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where he succumbed during December, 2018.

Bhagnauth was granted $350,000 bail with the conditions that he reports to Grove Police Station every Friday until completion of the matter. He will make his next court appearance on April 30, 2019.
