..attacks police ranks with knife

Teon Maxwell, the 24-year-old man who was killed by the police at he Vigilance Police Station earlier today, attempted to kill his wife on multiple occasions within the past 24 hours.

This is according to the man’s mother, who also noted that the man was sharpening knives and a cutlass to harm his family. It was also noted that the father of one of the village of Bareroot, East Coast Demerara was shot after inflicting a number of injuries to a party of policemen who arrested him.

This was confirmed by his mother who spoke with the press at the Vigilance Police Station, shortly after providing the police with a statement.

The man’s mother said that on Friday night, her son abused his reputed wife and also attempted to kill her. The woman said that on Saturday, he made other attempts to kill his wife, including chocking her and even sharpening knives and a cutlass to stab and chop the woman.

In outspoken tones, the man’s mother said that she encouraged her daughter-in-law to go to the police station. Further, she said that after the man refused to go and sort out the issue, the police were called to get him.

According to her, when the police arrived, her son was armed with two knives, a cutlass and hammer, all of which he allowed to be escorted to the police station with, and without being handcuffed.

Reports are that at the police station, while efforts were being made to have the man enter the facility, he whipped out a knife from his waist and began assaulting the ranks. One of the ranks sustained injuries to his hands while another rank reportedly sustained a stab wound to the abdomen.

At some point, the young man managed to overpower the ranks and jumped into a police vehicle, which still had its engine running, and attempted to drive off.

That prompted a police rank to open fire while the man was still in the vehicle; the suspect was struck and died at the police station compound.

The police have since launched an investigation both in relation to the incident and the apparent breach of standard operating procedure in arresting, escorting and detaining suspects.(Leroy Smith)
