A Vergenoegen, East Bank Essequibo fish vendor and his family were, on the evening of Saturday, March 9, 2019, attacked and robbed by three armed and unmasked bandits who relieved them of over $4M dollars’ worth in cash and jewellery.

The man, Mohan Persaud, 45, resides at Lot 13 Mc Watt Street, Vergenoegen, East Bank Essequibo, with his wife, Jennifer Persaud, 43, and their two children Geeta, 22, and Dukram, 10.

According to reports, on the day in question, at about 19:30 hours the family members were lying in hammocks at the bottom flat of their Vergenoegen home, when the three bandits, two men and a female, armed with guns, entered through the gate and held them at gun point.

One of the suspects asked Mohan if he was the person who sold drugs and the victim replied that he was only a fish vendor.
Mohan was taken to the storeroom at the bottom flat of his home and it was ransacked by one of the suspects.

One of the suspects pointed a gun to the head of Mohan’s son and ‘cranked’ it, while his mother, Jennifer, pleaded for her son’s life and informed the bandits that she would hand over all the money to them

The female suspect then took Jennifer and her daughter, Geeta, to the upper flat of the home.

Jennifer handed over Guy$3M, Cdn$1,000, $1M Demerara Bank Cheque with serial number unknown, two cell phones valued $110,000, one Samsung tablet valued $20,000.00 along with a quantity of jewellery.

During the ordeal, the suspect dealt Jennifer several blows to her head with the gun.
However, Mohan managed to escape and he raised an alarm. He went to the northern side of the street where he saw a white Toyota Raum with a PRR licence plate. The driver of the vehicle paid no attention to him and did not render assistance.

The three armed suspects ran out to the street and discharged several rounds in the air. The same white vehicle picked up the three suspects and drove away.

Mohan, along with his family, went to the Leonora Police Station and reported the matter and were escorted to the West Demerara Regional Hospital.

However, while in route along New Road, Vreed-en-Hoop, WCD, Mohan saw the white Toyota Raum registration # PRR 7951 and pointed it out to the police.
The vehicle was intercepted along with its driver, Kellon Thom, 32 of lot 115 Block ‘R’ Sophia, Greater Georgetown.

Mohan said that he recognized the said car, from its general appearance, to be the car he saw in the street outside of his home.

The police conducted a search in Thom’s car and on his person and a black Taurus Pistol with serial # F1G10955 on frame, six live matching rounds and a magazine were found. Also, Guy$269,000 and Cdn$120 were found in Thom’s possession.

Thom was questioned and was told of the offence he committed, cautioned and arrested and is presently in custody pending charges and further investigation into the robbery.
