A proud, but humble lady of Essequibo, born and bred in Charity, she has been working assiduously on her artistic abilities to ensure that she eventually attains the mark of being second to none in this country.

When the Guyana Chronicle caught up with her at the Literary and Visual Arts Street Fair on Main Street on Thursday, she said that she was inspired to do the head wraps because a lot of people have difficulties doing it for themselves.

Hudson explained, “I, myself have some amount of difficulties and so I have designed and developed my own patterns to have a cap, which looks like a head wrap, which is something that you can just slip on. You do not have to tie them or anything.”

All types of hair
“They are also designed to help prevent hair breakage, thinning the frizzy hair, while it also helps to lock your hair moisture in. They are comfy because we cater for the long hair. We cater for people with locks as well. We also cater for babies – so everybody has a size to suit them”, she said.

Hudson is catering for every female – big or small; with lots of hair or those who may have thin hair. She further explained that her head wraps come in a variety of colours – some in plain colours, some in African prints, as well as other colourful prints. She said that some even come in black and white – a mix that is very popular at this time.

She is also catering for those who may not have any hair on their heads because there are many people who are going ‘natural’. “They may have just taken that ‘big chop’ so we have a small for you – the small that would give you that nice snug fit that would make you look good”, she stated.

She uses satin in a lot of her head wraps. This prevents breakage because they can easily slide on; additionally, stretch materials are also used to help to give that comfortable fit.

New additions

Hudson started her business just about five years ago, “The head wraps is one of my more recent additions to the company. In addition, I have also added wooden earrings, which are made from local woods; some more hand bands and hand bags.”

She mentioned that many of her customers have had her products for many years, since they are made to last and give value for money. She says that sometimes her customers would randomly send her pictures of what they had bought some time back, fondly letting her know that those products still exist.

While residing temporarily in Trinidad and Tobago, in pursuit of a course, she said she made her first bag. There was no stopping as she returned to her homeland and continued to work on all sorts of pieces of craft, as well as female dresses of all sorts.

Marketing products
“At first it was a bit tough but as I came out and started mingling among people and they started realizing what I was doing, and liking my products as well, they began to buy my stuff and even started ordering specific things that they wanted from me. I am so happy to see that many people are appreciative of my craft and my unique designs and so they order all sorts of things in the line of what I do. In fact, I have both local and international markets at this time”, Ms. Hudson informed.

She told the Guyana Chronicle that her business is getting better and this is because of her desire to be successful and her determination to work hard, developing on her skills dad by day. Mh Designs products are available on contact with telephone number 665 9792. (mercilinburke2017@gmail.com)
