THE competition in the female division was not enough for Priyanna Ramdhani and the results proved why – two titles including one in the men’s doubles.
The Caribbean champion, who is our highest rated female player, was a dominant force in the GUMDAC Open Doubles tournament, which was played on Friday at the National Gymnasium.

The 17-year-old, who was also allowed to participate in the male competition due to her skillset, teamed up with Avinash Odit to defeat Ronald Chang Yeng and Jonathan Mangra 21-19, 13-21, 22-20 in a thrilling male double final.

In the semi-finals, Ramdhani and Odit had defeated Darrell Carpenay and Avian Rodrigues 21-15, 21-13, while Yuen and Mangra edged out Akili Haynes and Tyrese Jeffrey 21-18, 20-22, 22-20.

Ramdhani, who captained the national team at the Li Ning BWF World Juniors Mixed team and Individual Badminton Championships in Markham, Canada last year November, was also dominant in the female doubles.

The teen teamed up with Priscilla Moore in the women’s doubles to defeat Ayanna Watson and Christina Kumar 21-8, 21-11 in the final. Earlier the winners had defeated Jayde DaSilva and Stephanie Sanjar 21-5, 21-8, while the second-place finishers had gotten past Roseann Bulkan and Anna Perreira 21-12, 21-18.

Meanwhile in the consolation rounds (for players knocked out early), Easa Sanichara and Jamal Shamsudeen got past Vikash Mootoo and Matthew Beharry 21-13, 21-11 in the male final, while Nina Ramdeholl and Kayle Anthon defeated Kaya Boswick and Sasha Paramanand 21-18, 20-22, 21-19 in the female final clash.
