United dethrone Showstoppers to lift title

AFTER a pulsating night of football on the West Bank of Demerara at the Pouderoyen tarmac, Brothers United emerged as the new champions of the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ in the West Demerara Zone by defeating Showstoppers on penalty kicks.
Showstoppers, who are three-time champions of the zone, were frustrated and denied goal-scoring opportunities. It was much the same for Brothers United, but after regulation time and extra time failed to produce a winner, it was the latter who held their nerve to secure the title from the penalty spot.

Showstoppers’ penalty kick-takers failed to convert a single chance while United needed just one to hit the back of the net to claim victory.

Meanwhile, West Side Ballers edged ESPN in the Plate Final 2-1 in a thriller. ESPN took the lead early on in the game off the boot of Tefon Daly in the eighth minute but Ballers netted a Guinness goal (worth 2 goals in the final minutes of the game) through Dwayne St Gibbs in the 28th minute to seal the deal.

In the third-place playoff, Ballers Empire dispatched Up-Top Bosses 3-0 with Quincy Dos Santos netting in the seventh minute while Colin McCalmon struck in the 28th minute to register a Guinness goal.

For their victory, Brothers United walked away with $500 000, a trophy and automatic qualification for the National Playoffs while Plate winners West Side Ballers pocketed $50 000 for their effort.
