A NINETEEN-year-old Better Hope, East Coast Demerara resident was on Thursday committed by Senior Magistrate Leron Daly to stand trial at the High Court for attempted murder.
Orwin Smith, after undergoing a preliminary inquiry (PI) at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, was committed to stand trial before a judge and jury at the next practical sitting of the Demerara Criminal Assizes.
The matter was prosecuted by Corporal Richard Harris. Smith was released on $200,000 bail, pending his hearing at the High Court.
It is alleged that Smith, on July 30, 2018, at Avenue of the Republic, Georgetown, caused grievous bodily harm to James Abrams, with intent to commit murder.
According to reports, on the day in question, Smith asked his friend for $100 to go home; however, the friend told him to ask the bus driver to drop him at Plaisance, East Coast Demerara.
The bus driver refused to give Smith the drop which caused the men to end up in an argument. Smith then pulled out a pair of scissors and stabbed Abrams to his neck.
The injured bus driver was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation and Smith was arrested.
