Corentyne man dies in collision with truck

THE police are currently investigating a fatal accident which occurred along the Number 61 Public Road, Corentyne, Berbice, involving a motor lorry and a 31-year-old pedestrian.
Inquiries disclosed that at about 16:00 hours on January 04, 2018, motor lorry GVV 5643 was being driven by a resident of Chesney Village, Corentyne, when it collided with pedestrian Godfrey Wayne-Gomes, 31, of “C” Field Sophia, Greater Georgetown.

According to a release, the lorry was proceeding north along the western carriageway of the Number 61 Public Road, when, according to the driver, Gomes suddenly ran from east to west, into the path of the vehicle. Gomes was rushed to the Skeldon Public Hospital where he received treatment and was transferred to the New Amsterdam Hospital, but later succumbed to his injuries.

The body is presently at the hospital’s mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination. The driver passed a breathalyser test and is currently in police custody assisting with the investigation.
