Berbice women cop 2019 GCB Senior inter-county tournament

THE 50-Over format of the 2019 GCB Senior Female inter-county tournament concluded with the third round of matches yesterday at GCC and Everest Cricket Club grounds. Berbice defeated Demerara to finish top of the table and claim the title with two wins from three games.

At GCC, Demerara clashed with Berbice; Demerara won the toss and decided to bat, a decision which did not go in their favour, as they fell cheaply for a meagre 68 runs in 25.1 overs. Opening batter Lashuna Toussaint scored 16, while Akaze Thompson top-scored with 19, Heema Singh contributed 12.

Bowling for Berbice, Erva Giddings picked up 5 for 13 which gave her the player-of-the-match award while Sheneta Grimmond supported her with 2 wickets for 4 runs.
Berbice, in their reply, reached their total for the loss of just two wickets in 13.3 overs. Sheneta Grimmond was the lone batter to reach double figures knocking a valuable 36 off 31 balls. Heema Singh and Akaze Thompson collected a wicket each for Demerara.

Over at the Everest ground, Select Under-19 wrecked Essequibo as the team whipped up 384 for 4 in 42 overs. Shabika Gajnabi top-scored with a massive 160 while Cherry Ann Fraser fell short of her century by 7 runs scoring 93 off the innings.
Support also came from Lafona Gilgeous and Africa Gentle with 18 and 39 runs respectively. Vanita Balkishun collected 2 for 59 while Kumarie Persaud and Aniliza D’Aguiar also claimed a wicket each for the Essequibo team.

In reply, Essequibo failed to achieve their target and fell for a measly 55 runs in 18 overs which gave Select Under-19 a massive 329-run victory. Bowling for Select Under-19, Mandy Mangru cleaned up the Essequibo batting line up collecting 7 wickets for 18 runs while Navina Ramnauth grabbed the other 3 wickets for 14 runs.

With the conclusion of the 50-Over format, GCB will now turn their attention to the T20 format of this tournament which is scheduled to commence tomorrow.
It runs through to Sunday and in the first round of matches, Select Under-19 battle Berbice at Everest from 09:00hrs while Demerara will take on Essequibo from 13:30hrs at the same venue.
