THE Georgetown Football Club (GFC) on Sunday night finally ended the long wait for a senior title as they managed to repel Police FC and hold on for a memorable 2-1 victory as the Georgetown Football Association’s (GFA) ‘STAG Revival’ Cup came to a head.
With $500 000 and bragging rights at stake, both finalists had a cautious approach to the game. However, as time went by GFC grew in stature and confidence, so it was no surprise that semi-final hero LaVaugh Inniss struck in the 34th minute to give GFC the lead.
Staunch defending from GFC held off Police for the remainder of the first half. It was much of the same in the second half before GFC’s lead was extended in the 79th minute, courtesy of Rondell Peters.
However, Police went down fighting as Stephan Ramsey eventually found the back of the net in the 87th minute. But it was just a consolation, as GFC lifted the championship trophy and walked away with $500 000 cash.
The third-place play-off also ended with a similar score-line as GT Panthers outplayed Elite League winners Fruta Conquerors. Carlos Duncan was the first to get his name on the scoresheet for GT Panthers in the 20th minute before Fruta’s Dellon Williams equalised just before halftime.
Desmond Cotton was the eventual hero for GT Panthers after he struck in the 68th minute to seal the deal for his team.
The second-place winner Police pocketed $250 000, while third-place GT Panthers copped $150 000.
The Revival Cup was launched last year by GFA with support from the Guyana Football Federation (GFF), to involve football clubs within the Georgetown area, resuscitating competitive spirit between the Georgetown clubs after an extended period.
