WHILE the Guyana Police Force’ Special Branch has among its responsibilities conducting political analyses and intelligence, Minister of Public Security Khemraj Ramjattan on Wednesday admitted that sometimes these agencies can ‘miss information’
He was at the time responding to the inability of the unit to come up with information that could have provided either concrete evidence or a gateway to know that former Member of Parliament Charrandass Persaud might have been compromised in the lead up to the December 21, 2018 vote of no-confidence against the Government of Guyana in the National Assembly.
“You miss these things, especially when you have a smart traitorous fellow like him; these things happen” Ramjattan remarked in reference to Charrandass’ switch on the government. Notwithstanding that however, the security minister indicated that the Guyana Police Force is indeed investigating the now former Member of Parliament, but he would not get into details of the probe. His position mirrors that of Commissioner of Police Leslie James when he was asked last week by members of the press about the Charrandass Investigation.
“I would want to use the wisdom that the commissioner use too, he will make a statement soon on this matter, maybe before the week is out or next week,” Ramjattan told the media on Wednesday.
He said the probe is a sensitive one as it involves a Member of Parliament and also an Alliance For Change member. The minister added that the investigation is an important one. Asked if the investigation had anything to do with the involvement of Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo or PPP associate Peter Ramsaroop, the minister would not say. On the issue of his direct involvement in the ongoing investigation, the Minister of Public Security said that he first became involved in police aspect of the probe after putting the Commissioner of Police onto his colleague, Minister and Vice President Sydney Allicock.
