THE Guinness Greatest of the Streets Football championship has returned for the 10th year and the West Demerara/East Bank Zone will be the first to kick-start the action tomorrow at the Pouderoyen tarmac.

At the launch yesterday at Banks DIH, Thirst Park, the organisers indicated this is the fifth year that this zone is hosting the championships. Furthermore, it was noted that they have received a record number of entries, over 35 to be precise.

Usually, the Georgetown Zone kicks off the championship, but the organisers decided to make a change and allow Georgetown, the most supported zone in terms of fan following, to stage the final leg before the national playoff.

Brand Manager Lee Baptiste anticipates that fans will turn out in their numbers, given majority of the match days will be on Fridays.

Lone sponsor Colours Boutique has increased its support by providing each team with branded uniforms. Representative Creanna Damon hopes the tournament continues to reach its potential and to impact communities.

The opening night will have eight matches commencing at 18:00hrs. The other match nights are January 25 and February 1, 6, 8 and the final on the 16th.

The winners will pocket $500 000, while second-placers take home half that amount. Third- and fourth-placers will collect $200 000 and $100 000 respectively.

Last year, Showstoppers got their third straight title when they topped ESPN 3-0 in the final.
