GUYANA-born golfer Cris Guyadeen has qualified for the 2019 Golf Channel Amateur Tour Senior National Championship, owing to a third place finish earlier this month in the Sr. Palmer flight at the Golf Am Tour Trump Doral Amateur competition, which was held in Miami.
The GCA USA 2019 Championships is scheduled for this September at the PGA National Golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida.
The 60-year-old, who travelled home for last year’s Guyana Open, finished with a score of 83 and 77 over the two-day tournament.
Guyadeen, who hails from Bush Lot on the West Coast of Berbice, scored five birdies (one under par on an individual hole) on his second round, but also had a dreaded bogey (three over par) on hole five.
He has been trying to qualify for the Senior PGA tour for several years and he was elated that he made the cut. He told the Guyana Chronicle “It was my dream to compete at this professional level.”
The veteran golfer finished behind Americans Michael Fyfe (76 and 76) and John Psillas (77 and 79), while he got past Gary Murdoch (85 and 76), who put up a good battle on the final day.
Guyadeen, who only started to play golf in Guyana two years ago, moved to the US in 2004 and began playing the game there. He developed well and in 2010, he joined the Golf Channel Amateur Tour, where he played in their ‘A’ flight. During that time, the Berbician won several local tours and a two-day major.
