POLICE are investigating a fatal accident which occurred on Saturday afternoon in the vicinity of Marudi, Soesdyke-Linden Highway, resulting in the deaths of pedestrians Melva Lucus, 54, and Elsa Fernandes, 51, both of Grand Sand Road, Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara.

Reports are that a motorcar bearing registration PRR 3606, which was driven by a 28-year-old resident of Kuru Kururu village, Linden Highway, was proceeding along the roadway at a fast rate of speed.

The driver alleged that he swerved to avoid hitting a car which was travelling in the opposite direction and which was overtaking another vehicle at the time.
The driver in question lost control of his vehicle and collided with a wooden bus shed where the two women were standing, awaiting transportation.

The driver of the car passed a breathalyser test and remains in custody assisting police with investigations.
