 – after clubs vote for extension

THE Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) election of office bearers will now be held every two years after clubs voted 17-12 in favour of the extension at a recent meeting in the Ancient County.

Not only will the executive members elected have more time to carry out their mandate, but there will also be more structure.

Current BCB president, Hilbert Foster, who is favourite to retain his position at the next election, and his executives engineered the amendment from one year and the motion of having the life of the executives run from January 1 to December 31.

ALBION SPLIT

The Albion Cricket Club’s two votes went in different directions as one voter was in favour of the change, while the other lobbied with the Chesney Cricket Club, Blairmont Community Centre Cricket Club, the Berbice River Cricket Association and the West Berbice Cricket Association in opposing the move.

Those in favour of the motion were the Upper Corentyne Cricket Association, Kildonan Cricket Club, Port Mourant Cricket Club, Rose Hall Canje Cricket Club, the Mental Hospital Cricket Club, Mt. Sinai Cricket Club, Guymine Sports Club and the delegate from Albion.

 PREVIOUS MOTIONS

A few weeks ago, the BCB passed two other motions to include the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club and the Young Warriors Cricket Club to its membership by a 25 to 0 vote, while a 22 to 8 vote was obtained for vacancies on the Berbice Cricket Board executives to be filled at special general meetings.

MASSIVE DEVELOPMENT

Foster updated the members on the massive development taking place in the county. He said that the BCB in 2018 hosted a record-breaking 30 tournaments at the Under-13, Under-15, Under-17, Under-19, Under-21, female, primary school, secondary school, double- wicket, internal zone, second division and first division levels.

The Foster-led administration also hosted dozens of developmental programmes, while at the same time the BCB raised over $10M in cash and kind via an aggressive marketing drive.

The BCB president urged the delegates to cooperate with each other and reminded the clubs that the main objective should be the support for youths to fulfil their dreams.

“The duty of a cricket administrator is to create pathways for the next generation of players,” Foster stated.
