The indigenous community of Capoey on the Essequibo Coast is in a state of shock after a resident was discovered motionless with a cut to his throat on Monday morning.
Dead is 23-year-old Sherwin Melville , a machine operator and a father of one.
Reports are that the man was attacked by someone he befriended on Sunday night; his assailant has since fled the scene and the police are hunting for him.
According to Joyce Meville, wife of the deceased, her husband was imbibing with relatives on Sunday night. She said that he then left to purchase cigarettes when he met another man a the community shop.
She said after sometime, her husband returned home with the man and she noted that she was unhappy that her partner brought the stranger to their home.She then left for her mother’s home with the baby during the night.
On Monday morning around 0500hrs, she decided to check on her husband and was shocked to see the door of their home open. Even more terrifying was the sight of her husband lying motionless on the floor with his throat slashed. She said based on the state of his clothing , including his opened pockets, the man was robbed by his assailant.
While no one from the village was familiar with the assailant, a villager claimed the suspect works on a ship on the island of Wakenaam.
The police later visited the scene while the body of the victim was taken to the Suddie Hospital Mortuary where he is awaiting a post-mortem examination. (Indrawattie Natram)
