THERE were contrasting wins for Trinidad’s Shiva Boys Hindu College and Christianburg/ Wismar Secondary School on the opening day of the inaugural KFC Goodwill schools’ football cup.
While CCWS and Annandale needed penalties to decide a winner, Shiva easily outplayed Annai Secondary at the Ministry of Education ground.
The feature game was a tense affair with a lot of bad blood being left over from the recently concluded GUYOIL Tradewind tankers football tournament.
Linden had a point to prove after they finished behind the East Coast side in the league play format, but it was Annandale who scored first through Omari Glasow three minutes from the end of the first half.
CWSS then came out swinging as they had one-two efforts by Andre Mayers in the 78th and 80th, taking the lead in the contest with just 10 minutes left on the clock.
Annandale then showed their true form when Kurt Rudder took the game to penalties with a last-gasp goal on the cusp of injury time.
In the end though, the game belonged to the Linden side after a 5-3 penalty shootout.
In the other game, things went Shiva’s way.
In the third minute of the clash, Shiva’s Gesiah Bishop was brought down in the penalty area by one of the Rupununi- based players and Bishop was spot on to find the back of the net.
Shiva’s dominated the match and it was evident that their level of training was different and they surely demonstrated such on the Carifesta Avenue ground.
The T&T lads pace, first touch and passing accuracy were excellent. The youngsters weren’t short of flicks and tricks and they had their fair bit of fun, dribbling the Region Nine team that found it hard to get their footing.
Shiva’s boys only shortcoming was their finishing and delivery in the final third of the game when they should have scored at least two more goals.
Heading into half-time, the score was two-nil after the skipper, Nikel Roberts, had blasted in a good strike from 20 yards out in the 23rd minute.
After the win, Shiva’s skipper, Roberts, noted that “It (the match) was a tough challenge and I am happy that my team was good enough to come out with the win and we are looking forward to a fantastic tournament here in Guyana.”
The KFC goodwill tournament features four school teams– three from Guyana and one from T&T– battling for the KFC Cup in a round-robin format over three days.
The tournament continues tomorrow with CWSS playing Annai from 17:00hrs while Shiva plays Annandale from 19:00hrs.
