Mangra and Ramdhani win Trophy Stall badminton open titles

JONATHAN Mangra and Priyanna Ramdhani emerged as respective winners of the male and female open divisions in the Trophy Stall Christmas Badminton tournament that concluded on Saturday at the National Gymnasium in Georgetown.

Sixteen-year-old Ramdhani, who is the number one ranked female player in the U-19 division of the Caribbean Regional Badminton Confederation (CAREBACO), won two titles at the two-day event.

In the Ladies Open final, the 2011 National Junior Sports Woman of the Year defeated Pricilla Moore 21-8 and 21-8, while in the U-19 Girls’ Singles final, she made light work of Ashley Escarraga 21-6 and 21-4.

Third place in the Ladies Open went to Christina Kumar, who got past Ayanna Watson 21-16, 16-21, 15-21.

Mangra defeated Avinash Odit (21-8, 21-14) in the Men’s Open final, while Akili Haynes finished third with a win over Darrell Carpenay: 20-22, 21-16 and 21-16.

Haynes claimed an overall victory when he competed in the U-19 Boys Singles final after beating Tyrese Jeffrey 21-19, 21-18.

In the Open Men Singles consolation final, Easa Sanichara defeated Hemraj Beharry 30-28, 21-15.

Younger Age Division
There were also age competitions for U-11 and U-15 players.

The U-11 Boys final was won by Leron Ramascindo who defeated Aninash Ramnarine in three sets (22-20, 20-22, 21-5). Mishka Beharry won the Female final in the same age division with a 21-9, 21-8 win over Gianna Ramnarine  21-9, 21-8.

Meanwhile, Matthew Beharry got the better of Vikash Mootoo (21-14, 21-19) in the Boys’ U-15 final, while Lesha Singh defeated Elesa Sangster 21-14, 21-13 in the Girls’ U-15 final.

According to a release, the Guyana Badminton Association would like to thank Director of Sport Christopher Jones for making the presentation; GBA executive Ayanna Watson of SOL for presenting gifts to the winners and Banks DIH for the light refreshments.
