A VENEZUELAN man on Monday appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan and was sentenced to two years imprisonment on a charge of illegal possession of gun and ammunition when he appeared in the Georgetown magistrates’ court.
The charge alleges that on December 7, 2018 at in the Cuyuni, Caesar Agusto Gonzalez Suarez, had in his possession 15 rounds of ammunition without being a firearm licence holder at the time.
It was further alleged that on the same day, at the same location, Gonzalez had in his possession a 9mm pistol without being a firearm licence holder at the time.
The man pleaded guilty to both charges that were read out to him in court by the magistrate and translated in Spanish with the aid of a translator.
According to the facts presented by Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield, on the day in question about 20:00 hrs, ranks in the area were on patrol when the defendant was observed acting in a suspicious manner, A search that was carried out on him and a black shoulder bag he had in his possession, unearthed a 9mm pistol along with 15 rounds of ammunition.
The defendant was arrested later transferred to Georgetown, where with the aid of a translator, Gonzalez told the court that ‘’ I have never been trouble before, I use the gun for personal defence’’.
However, he was sentenced to two years imprisonment and fined $50,000 for the ammunition charge and two years along with another $50,000 fine for the gun charge.
The sentence will run concurrently.
