A WELL calculated century by Stephan Browne led the Malteenoes Sports Club to a 22-run victory against home team, Gandhi Youth Organisation (GYO) in the latest fixture of the GCA/New Building Society (NBS) 2nd Division 40-over cricket tournament.

Malteenoes lost the toss and were sent in to bat. They looked solid early even after losing opener Shaquille Moseley (0), as Tuen Hicks joined Browne and the pair tallied 88 runs with the former hitting 30 (4×4).

After Hicks fell, it was all up to Browne. The opener, who has shown form over the last few months, paced his innings well despite losing wickets constantly at the other end.

He brought up his century with an exquisite four, driven through the deep midwicket boundary off medium pacer Sachin Singh (not the national U-17 captain), before he was caught a few balls later attempting another big shot.  His 102 included 13 fours. Two balls later, Malteenoes were bowled out for 223 as the innings wrapped up in 39.5 overs.

Left-arm spinner Trevon France finished with 3-34, while Darshan Persaud, Divesh Ramjattan and Singh picked up two wickets each.

GYO’s batsmen had a few starts, but five of them lost their wickets without reaching double figures.

Michael Deonarine led the home team’s attack with 58 (4×4, 1×6), while teenager Navindra Persaud, who scored a century against the Diplomats in the previous clash, added 47. The youngster, who struck four boundaries, was patient at the crease.

Also getting a start was Singh, who scored 27 (3×4), but support was little as Malteenoes skipper Nicosie Barker and Delon Dalrymple took three wickets to bowl out the home team for 201 in 38.5 overs.
