TEAM Coco’s wheelsman Jamual John is the leading cyclist in Guyana for the second year running, after chalking up nine victories so far despite being absent from Guyana’s circuit for the last quarter of the year.

As local cycling entity, Guyana Cycling News’ (GCN) annual awards ceremony beckons John is in pole position to cop the top cycling accolade for 2018.

Following his 10 victories last year, John was in top form in 2018 becoming the first cyclist to retain the Kadir Mohamed Memorial ‘ounce of gold’ race, just one highlight among his many conquests.

However, John is closely followed by Hamzah Eastman and Team Evolution’s Paul DeNobrega who are tied on seven wins. DeNobrega has had some impressive wins, most recently at the annual Digicel Cancer Awareness Cycling meet where he overcame a punctured back wheel to stage an incredible comeback victory.

Eastman also impressed but he too, like John, has been on the overseas circuits, hence he missed a few meets.

Two other cyclists who have been quietly consistent are Michael Anthony and Romello Crawford with four wins each.

On the updated GCN points table, John is leading with 226 points while DeNobrega is in second with 201, Curtis Dey third (178), Romello Crawford fourth (107) and Hamzah Eastman in fifth with 100 points.

The Guyana Cycling News is headed by Balram Singh and Malcolm Sonaram. Their main aim is to promote cycling and cyclists in Guyana, to stage races and to publish placings, interviews, cycling content from all other Caribbean countries and North American associates.

The Annual Awards came about after GCN created a points system to award the cyclists for their efforts at the end of the year.

The GCN Awards Ceremony is set for Saturday (December 15) in the auditorium of St Stanislaus College from 19:00hrs.
