AN expressionless Esmond Kwesi Slowe was on Tuesday afternoon committed to prison, after a mixed 12-member jury found him guilty in the proportion of 11 to 1 for sexual activity with a child, a family member.

The matter was before Justice Jo-Ann Barlow in the Sexual Offences Court of the Demerara High Court in which there was a summation of the case, after which the jury retired for hours of deliberation.

According to the state’s case, on December 16, 2016 in the County of Demerara, Slowe engaged in sexual activity with a child under the age of 16.

The child was 14 at the time of the incident and during the convict’s testimony, he told the court that he was drunk and could not remember what happened on the day in question.

A probation report was however requested by defence attorney Maxwell McKay and it was granted by Justice Barlow.

Slowe will be sentenced on December 14 at 09:00hrs, following the presentation of his probation report.

The state was represented by Seeta Bishundial and Abigail Gibbs.
