…after torching combination lock on safe
POLICE in `G’ Division (Essequibo Coast, Essequibo Islands) are continuing their investigations into an alleged robbery which happened on Saturday at the Charity Post Office.
According to information reaching the Guyana Chronicle, approximately $2 million belonging to pensioners went missing. It was observed by the postmistress that the safe that contained pensioners’ money was torched and the money missing.
She told the police that she counted and secured $2.3M in the post office safe, which was secured by a combination lock.
The postmistress reportedly told police that the place was broken into in the wee hours of Saturday morning. The perpetrators allegedly gained entry through a window at on the side of the building, after which they torched the combination lock on the safe.
Residents living in the Charity area said that the post office is in a deplorable condition and does not have proper security. The doors are reportedly secured by bolts and padlocks, while some of the old wooden-framed windows are secured by internal grills.
At the time of the robbery there were reportedly no security guards at the building. No one is in custody thus far for the burglary.
