GUYANA’s dominance at next week’s Caribbean Boxing Championships is not confirmed and the Land of Many Waters could face stiff competition from several countries.
This was the pronouncement of Guyana Boxing Association president Steve Ninvalle.
The Caribbean Championship will run from Thursday December 6th to Sunday December 9th at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.

“The only thing that is confirmed at this time is that we will have the home court advantage,” Ninvalle said in an interview yesterday moments after a 34-member team was encamped at the National Gymnasium.
“The likes of French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados have been exposing their boxers to major international events over the last two years which makes the upcoming four-day championship an interesting event.”

“Trinidad and Tobago has a contingent of 38 inclusive of 2016 Olympian Nigel Paul , and Lightweight Michael Alexander.
French Guiana is fielding a team that includes several that have had extended stints in France. In a nutshell Guyana has its work cut out,” Ninvalle stated.
However, the GBA boss assured that Team Guyana would rise to the occasion and is hard at work.

Meanwhile, boxers from St. Lucia and Dominica will join Trinidad and Tobago here in Guyana to contest for championship honours.
According to reports, St Lucia will be represented by a six-member team which includes three boxers, a referee, a coach and a manager in Guyana’s veteran sports commentator Joseph `Reds’ Perreira who, in a correspondence, explained that his squad will include the likes of seasoned campaigners Nathan Ferrari and Linden Mursalim. The St Lucia Boxing Association is currently seeking permission to have a 14-year-old Youth boxer released from the school system to compete in Guyana.

In addition to St Lucia, Dominica has confirmed participation in this year’s championship also.
Dominica is seeking to send a six-member contingent inclusive of three fighters, a referee, a coach and a manager.

Action on each day of the tournament starts at 18:00hrs. Admission is $500 for the stands and $1 000 for ringside.
