Malicious wounding case against alleged Stabroek Market arsonist dismissed

A 23-year-old woman, who is the main suspect in the fire that was allegedly set at the Stabroek Market Wharf, appeared on Friday before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan for unlawfully wounding her common law husband.

Quiana Major of Tucville, Georgetown, appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and denied the charge, which alleged that on November 19, 2018, at Stabroek Market Wharf, she unlawfully and maliciously wounded Compton Ferreira.

The victim did not wish to proceed with the matter and as such the magistrate had no choice but to dismiss the matter against the defendant.
The court heard that Major stabbed Ferreira with a knife; however, the man explained that it was a “slight wound.”

According to reports, following an argument with her partner, the irate woman allegedly set alight a stall aback the Stabroek Market. The blaze razed several other stalls leaving millions in losses in its wake.
Reports are that the fire began sometime between 22:00hrs and midnight that Monday.
The investigation into the fire is still ongoing.
