…lauds election of youthful mayors

A PARTNERSHIP for National Unity (APNU) said it is committed to ensuring that the young people of Guyana get the opportunities to lead and to enjoy the good life.

“Our Partnership recognises that young people are the trustees of our nation’s future and they deserve to be given the best opportunities to be educated, employed and most of all empowered,” APNU said in a statement.

The coalition calls attention to the more than one hundred youth candidates who participated in the recently concluded Local Government Elections. “Further, we note with pride that most of them have now been elected to serve at the municipal, district and neighbourhood levels of government.”

The party congratulated the Mayor-elect of the City of Georgetown, Pandit Ubraj Narine; Mayor-elect of Bartica Mr. Gifford Marshall and Mayor-elect of Linden Ms. Waneka Arrindell (all young persons under 40 years old) and wish them every success during their tenure at the helm of their municipalities. “APNU recognises the importance of empowering our youth. The APNU+AFC government is mainstreaming youth development.

We have promulgated a National Youth Policy which has been adopted by the National Assembly. The ‘Policy’ aims at accelerating youth involvement in decision making, improving their social, emotional and cultural skills and producing an enterprising and educated youth population. Our coalition government has re-invigorated the system of local democracy.

We have ended the previous regime’s odious practice of removing elected municipalities and installing the ignominious interim management committees.”
According to APNU, these local elections have empowered “our youth, energised our communities and eliminated one of the sources of strife and stagnation.”
