THREE suspected bandits are now in the custody of the police after they were intercepted by ranks on the Meer-Zorgen Public Road, West Bank Demerara (WBD), following a robbery at Canal Number One Polder.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), Superintendent Jairam Ramlakhan, the men were caught by ranks who were at the time conducting a stop and search exercise on the Meer-Zorgen Public Road (western end of the harbour bridge).

According to the superintendent, at 03:30hrs on Wednesday, the men attempted to cross the harbour bridge in a yellow wagon motorcar when it was stopped and searched.

A laptop, earpieces, four cellular phones, an Amazon Tablet, an assortment of jewellery, a Guyana Passport, local and foreign currencies and other items were found in the vehicle.

The men were escorted to the La Grange Police Station where, moments later, a report was made of a robbery which occurred at Canal Number One Polder.

The victims visited the Police Station where they positively identified the stolen items.

Superintendent Jairam Ramlakhan noted that “the regular presence of the police on the western end of the Demerara Harbour Bridge has been very successful since its inception and a number of persons were arrested and charged with guns and ammunition possession, and other offences.”

He noted that there has also been a decrease in serious crimes in the West Demerara/East Bank Essequibo region as a result of the above mentioned strategy.
