ON Wednesday, Magistrate Peter Hugh ruled that based on the evidence presented by the prosecution a prima facie case has been proven against 53-year-old Deonarine Bhikari for the murder of another man some 18 years ago.
Bhikari was charged in May of this year with the murder of Daniel Singh; the murder took place 18 years ago at Enmore, East Coast Demerara. The man was represented by the De Santos Chambers while the Hannamon Chambers acted as the special prosecutor in the matter.
The magistrate told the accused that his matter will be tried in the High Court at the next available sitting. Back in 2002, Bhikari allegedly hacked Singh to death after the latter refused to allow him to continue a relationship with his young daughter at the time.
After the incident , which was witnessed by the dead man’s young children, Bhikari packed his things and fled the jurisdiction to Venezuela where; there he remained in hiding until he returned home to Guyana earlier this year.
When the man returned to Guyana he was reportedly hiding out at his parents ‘ home; however, persons spotted him and remembered the crime he had committed close to two decades ago.
