A FISH vendor was on Wednesday remanded to prison after he appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court charged with robbery under arms.
Jonathan Ishmael, 28, of East La Penitence, appeared before Magistrate Fabayo Azore and denied the charge which states that on October 4, 2018 at Ramp Road, East Bank Demerara, while being in the company of others and armed with a knife, he robbed Rabindradat Seodath of a cellphone valued at $20,000 and $1,000 in cash.
Police Prosecutor Rorrel Thornhill objected to bail due to the seriousness of the offence. According to the police facts, on the day in question, the victim was walking along Ramp Road when the accused and his accomplice, Mohamed Shafeek, rode up to him and asked for $200. While taking out the money, Seodath’s cellphone came out the same time and the accused, along with his accomplice, robbed the victim of his cellphone and $1000 in cash. The matter was reported.
The father of two was remanded to prison by the magistrate. The matter was adjourned to November 28, 2018.
On October 17, 2018, 39-year-old Mohammed Shafeek, who was an accomplice to the robbery, was sentenced to 36 months imprisonment by Magistrate Judy Latchman after pleading guilty to the same offence.
