– to make life easier for our beleaguered postal clerks
By Jeune Van-Keric
DUE to constant attacks by dogs on postal clerks, members of the public are being asked to install mailboxes on or near their fences or gates, so as to allow for the easy delivery of important mail.
Failure to do so will result in residents having to go to their local post offices to uplift their mail themselves rather than have them delivered, warned Minister of Public Telecommunication, Catherine Hughes on Monday during the recommissioning of the refurbished New Amsterdam Post Office.
“This is becoming an impossible task. I cannot justify seeing people being attacked and not do something about it,” Minister Hughes said.
“So, we are rapidly getting to a stage where we are going to be saying that we are giving all Guyanese six months to get a post box, which is very affordable.
“After six months, if you don’t have a post box, then you will have to go to the post office to collect your mail. I have to protect my staff,” she added to a round of resounding applause from members of staff of the Guyana Post Office Corporation (GPOC) present at the function.
“Further, for some years now, the Guyana Post Office Corporation has been racking up high costs to sort and store the mail that could not be delivered to you, mostly because there is no mailbox to place it in.
“In consideration of the safety and security of your personal letters, your registered Air and Local mail, your notices and cheques from the NIS, GRA, GTT and GPL, I urge you to put up mailboxes at your homes.
Paint on your surnames and lot numbers, and mount them where the postal worker could drop in your mail easily.”
