TODAY, Guyana’s creme de la creme of cyclists will be vying for top honours and a chance to snare an ounce of ‘raw gold’ when the seventh Annual Kadir Mohamed Memorial Road Race pedals off.
Organised by the Flying Stars Cycle Club and sponsored by the Mohamed family of Bartica, the event has at stake a total of $1M in prize money along with other incentives up for grabs and will wheel off at 07:00hrs from outside the National Sports Commission building on Homestretch Avenue.\
The cyclists will then journey to Dora on the Soesdyke/Linden Highway before returning to the place of origin for the finish.
This route is set for seniors, juniors and veterans Under-45 years of age.
The juveniles, veterans over 45 years of age, as well as the mountain-bikers will turn back at Yarrowkabra, also on the Soesdyke/Linden Highway.
While the overall winner will receive one ounce of raw gold, the second- to eight-place finishers will be rewarded with cash prizes, as will the top four finishers in the junior category, the top three in both the veterans under and over 45 years of age and the top three mountain-bikers.
With last year’s winner, Jamual John away racing on the overseas circuits and unlikely to make a title defence, the race is wide open with the title up for grabs. Eyes will be on Geron Williams, the resurgent Michael Anthony, National road race champion Curtis Dey, Paul DeNobrega and Alonzo Ambrose who will all make for a thrilling encounter.
