Destitute jailed for forging NIS voucher

CITY Magistrate, Annett Singh on Thursday sentenced a 45-year-old man to four months’ jail for forgery and attempting to defraud the National Insurance Scheme (NIS).

David Ali, of no fixed place of abode, was found guilty of the offence which alleged that on May 7, 2018 at the NIS office on Brickdam, he handed to a cashier; a forged disablement voucher valued $90,675 knowing same to be false.

He was also found guilty of forging his disablement pension voucher issued for the sum of $9,695 purporting to show that the sum is $90,695.

Ally was not presented for the last two court hearings forcing the Magistrate to sentence him in absentia.
