AS the clock strike 10:00hrs on Friday, many persons representing various political parties, voluntary groups and individuals contesting in the upcoming Local Government Elections in Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam) gathered at the various Local Authority Areas (LAAs) to submit their lists of candidates to the Returning Officers.

For Region Two, there are nine Local Authority Areas (LAAs) with 120 constituencies. At this year’s Local Government Elections, three new Local Authority Areas were created in the Pomeroon area. The LAAs for the region are Aberdeen/Zorg- en- Vlygt, Annandale/Riverstown, the Anna Regina Municipality, Good Hope/Pomona, Charity/Urasara, Evergreen/Paradise, Kitty/Providence in the Pomeroon River, Moruka/Phoenix Park and Nile Cozier.

The Aberdeen/Zorg-en-Vlygt LAA has eight constituencies, Annandale/Riverstown nine constituencies, Anna Regina eight constituencies, Good Hope/Pomona nine constituencies, Charity/Urasara nine constituencies, Evergreen/Paradise eight constituencies, Kitty/Providence three constituencies, Moruka/Phoenix Park, three constituencies and Niles/Cozier three constituencies.

Meanwhile, information coming out of the GECOM Office at Anna Regina described Nomination Day as quiet and the process was smooth. The various GECOM offices in the Local Authority Areas were opened at 10:00hrs promptly and closed at 14:00hrs. According to the returning officers from the various centres, there were minor changes to the forms submitted. Some political parties had to make changes such as re-submitting clearer pictures for their candidates as well as corrections of spellings of names.
Submissions

In the various LAAs, supporters from the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) came out in their numbers to support their candidates. At Annandale/Riverstown, scores of PPP supporters were seen with party slogans and flags waving in support for their candidates. Charran Sarabjeet presented the PPP/C’s list at the Annandale/ Riverstown NDC. Sarabjeet, who is the campaign manager for the PPP/C party in that district, said that he is confident that the PPP will win in that LAA. He said supporters were at the LAA as early as 06:00hrs.

After the PPP submitted their lists, the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) submitted theirs in that LAA. Making the submissions were Marlene Lake and Leon Nedd. Both Lake and Nedd arrived at the LAA very early and while submitting their list, their supporters were seen cheering them on. Both Lake and Nedd said the APNU party is ready for the Local Government Elections.

Political parties that are contesting the elections in Region Two are; A partnership for National Unity, People’s Progressive Party/Civic, Alliance for Change, United Party for National Growth and Development, United Republican Party and GNS. The only group that will be contesting the elections within the Charity/Urasara LAA is United Destiny Group. Six political parties have registered to vie for the Township of Anna Regina. Police from G Division were seen at all the LAAs.
