A night of crystals, drinking, dancing

…and then the escape

AFTER a night of partying, 21-year-old Shadrack King found himself before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan on two robbery charges and escaping from police custody.

King of East Ruimveldt pleaded guilty to the charge which read that on August 10, 2018 at Stabroek Access Road, while being in the company of another he robbed Lawrence Salvador of $5,000 cash.

He also accepted that on the same day, while being in custody at the City Constabulary Stabroek Market outpost, he escaped from police custody.

King however, denied robbing Danny Singh of $33,500 worth in items on the same day at Stabroek Access Road. “I don’t know about that,” the unrepresented young man told the court.

According to the facts presented in court, Salvador, a businessman who operates along the Stabroek Market, was robbed at around 04:00hrs by the accused and another. The report noted that King was nabbed by the police and was taken back to the outpost where he escaped thought a window.

King told the court: “I didn’t even know what I was doing… I was high-high,” he explained, as he was in the club partying earlier before the confrontation with Salvador.

The unrepresented man also told the court that he was in the club when someone gave him crystals (molly) and he did not know what it was as he continued drinking and dancing.
He further added that he came out of the club and went down to Stabroek for transportation to go home when he met with a family friend.

“The family friend tell me how the man (Salvador) owed him some money and I helped him to get it back,” he said. “I went up to the victim as I held him while the family friend took away his money.”

King added that after the ordeal he went to ‘catch a car’ to go home when he was arrested by the police.

“When I go to the outpost … I jump thought the window… if I didn’t high I would never had done them things,” he said.

The magistrate fined King $ 15,000 on the two charges that he confessed to and released him on$3,000 bail on the charge he denied. The matter is adjourned until August 20.
