A 30-member team from the Guyana Karate College (GKC), which is accredited by the International Karate Daigaku (IKD), will travel to Barbados later this month where they will compete at the IKD World Cup from August 16-19.

The team has been preparing for the World Cup since the beginning of 2018 through intense training in all areas of the discipline, even underwater training at the National Aquatic Centre.

Guyana finished second overall at the last World Cup in 2015 and Shihan Jeffrey Wong (7th Dan Black Belt) is optimistic that his charges can go one better and win the World Cup.

“I’m hoping that our intense training and discipline will result in our karatekas doing better that three years ago when we finished second at the IKD World Cup.”

Over 20 countries including Canada, Mexico, South Africa, the Philippines and the entire Caribbean is expected to participate at this year’s World Cup.

The International Karate Daigaku (IKD) was founded in 2011 and focusses on traditional Shotokan Karate with an emphasis on understanding why they do karate the way they do, and how to improve techniques through scientific means. A major goal of the IKD is to help young people throughout the world by guiding them and therefore breaking the cycle of violence through the discipline of karate.

The IKD World Cup is held every three (3) years and provides an opportunity for members around the world to compete against each other and simultaneously improve fellowship among members.
