PRESIDENT of the Guyana Squash Association (GSA), David Fernandes feels positive that the junior squash team will play at their best and advance to the finals in both team and individual divisions at the Caribbean Area Squash Association (CASA) tournament to be held in Jamaica this weekend.

Team Guyana will be led by one of Guyana’s top female player, Rebecca Low, and she is proud to be their captain and is eager to see how they will perform.

When asked about how she feels about leading the young team, Low disclosed “ I’m really proud to be their captain and I feel like they’re a lot of strong players coming up and I’m really excited to see how they’ll fend on the court and defend their country.”

Fernandes feels confident in the male division players and has no doubt in their performances. “For the under-17 boys, Daniel should at least bring in top four. Shomari Wiltshire has been dominant in his group age since he first started and should win his category. Michael Alphonso, who is our under-13 player, he should do very well in his category and he should make top two.”

In like manner, he feels the female division players will also show results. “ Becky, who is our team captain, is a very, very talented player. She’s very smart on the court , if she believes she can do it, I think that she could surprise people. Sarah as well has the same problem; very athletic, has the ability but she has to believe.”

The GSA president went on to say that even though they do not have an under-17 girls team, he’s keeping a positive attitude for the two under-15 girls who may play the under-17.“ In terms of the under-17 girls, we don’t have an under-17, so our under-15 girls are playing up; all players will play individuals in under-15 and then they’ll play in the team. Two of them may play under-17.”

Fernandes concluded that he’s confident that the team will advance to the finals.” I think we have a good team and it’s well-balanced. I feel confident we’ll be in the finals for our teams and quite a few finals for individuals.”
