A FIRE of unknown origin completely destroyed a two-flat wooden building, several hours after its caretaker left the Lot 7 First Street, Overwinning Village, East Bank Berbice, home around 00:30hrs on Sunday morning.
Rawattie Goberdhan last visited the furnished home of her deceased mother, Mavis Sankar, on Friday when she cleaned the building before leaving for her residence at Number Two Village, Corentyne.
Sankar, a pensioner, had died on April 29 last, leaving the recently renovated property for her three adult daughters, one of whom resides overseas.
The family is awaiting a report from the Guyana Fire Service which should give an insight into the cause of the fire which resulted in millions of dollars in losses.
According to neighbours, they were awakened by the sound of breaking glass and, on peering through their windows, they saw the blaze in the upper flat of the building.
