BOXING returns to the mining town tomorrow with ‘Boxing on the River’, an initiative of boxing coach Orlando ‘Pocket Rocket’ Rogers, organised as part of the Linden River Festival 2018.
Set for the Wismar Market Tarmac on Burnham Drive, the event will feature pugilists from the Guyana Prison Service, the Forgotten Youth Foundation Gym, Pocket Rocket Gym and the Carryl’s Gym.
Rogers, who is the coordinator of the even, said that this year more gyms from across Guyana will be participating in the competition and it is expected to be bigger and better.
“We are looking for the region to come out and support us,” Rogers said, adding, “This is the second year the Boxing on the River competition will be held as part of the Linden River Front Festival and while [sic] the support was favourable last year.”
Rogers believes that more Lindeners should come out this year since more will be on offer. “We will be having the Under 16, the Juniors and Seniors which will be the elites.” Commonwealth silver medallist, Keevin Allicock, is also expected to participate in the competition.
Rogers, who is a veteran boxer, is the founder of the “Pocket Rocket” boxing gym which sifts out the talent hidden in Linden youths and moulds them into becoming professional boxers. The gym has recorded several successes since its establishment. Rogers has also been appointed as hinterland boxing coach by Minister George Norton and has since established several hinterland gyms in Regions 1, 7, 8 and 9.
