12 years for ‘Turning Point’ killing

OMAR McDonald Williams called “Shawn” was on Friday afternoon sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to the lesser count of manslaughter, for the 2013 killing of DJ Sheldon Cheddie at a snackette at Turning Point, Tucville.

In handing down his sentence Justice Sandil Kissoon told the court, that he started at a base of 25 years but made some deductions for time served, the guilty plea and other mitigating factors.

Williams in his address to the court said, he was sorry for what happened and asked the family members of the deceased for forgiveness and stated that he wished he had done things differently, as he begged the court for leniency.

According to the indictment presented by State Prosecutor Lisa Cave, on September 9, 2013 Williams allegedly murdered Sheldon Cheddie.

The accused on Friday, pleaded not guilty to murder but guilty to the lesser count of manslaughter when he appeared in the Georgetown High Court before Justice Sandil Kissoon.

According to the facts, Cave said that on the night of September 9, 2013 the deceased and other friends were standing outside a snackette at Turning Point,Tucville, conversing and drinking when the accused and another man approached the deceased.

She related that the accused pulled out what appeared to be a handgun and pointed it at the deceased and discharged several shots.

The injured Sheldon Cheddie was taken to GPHC where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

A post mortem was performed and the cause of death was given as shock and haemorrhage due to multiple gunshot wounds.

In his plea of mitigation, Defence Attorney, Mark Waldron said his client had been in jail since 2013 and was the father of seven children.

He added that the accused had accepted responsibility and expressed remorse for his actions and although the incident was unfortunate, he asked the court to temper justice with mercy to arrive at a reasonable sentencing.
