DAY TWO of the 2018 French Open was filled with upsets and Sachia Vickery was made to join the list of top players who were left licking their wounds after their heart-breaking upsets.
Roland Gorros defending champion, Jelena Ostapenko, was beaten in straight sets by Ukrainian, Kateryna Kozlova, 7-5 6-3, while seven-time Grand Slam winner, Venus Williams, went down to world number 91, Wang Qiang of China 6-4, 7-5.
Vickery, playing as an automatic selection in the main draw at the French Open for the first time in her career, was playing Keys, last year’s US Open finalist for the second time, and the result was much like the first when the world number 76-ranked Vickery fell in straight sets, 6 – 3, 6 – 3.
The 23-year-old Vickery, who, despite being American, carries the Golden Arrowhead as a representation of her parents–Rawle Vickery and Paula Liverpool. She had told Chronicle sport that she was “really happy that I’ll be in the main draw at the French Open for the first time, off my own rankings and without any wild card or qualification. I’m really happy about that and I’ll also be in the main draw at Wimbledon this year with my ranking.”
Despite bowing out in the first round of the French Open, just as she did in 2016, Vickery said that presently, she intends to keep working hard with the aim of breaking into the top 50 by the end of the year.
