UNITED We Stand Cycle Club is set to host their inaugural Three-Stage cycling road race this weekend with lucrative prizes up for grabs.
The crème-de-la-crème of Guyana’s top cyclists will be on show in the first stage of the event which is set to begin at 07:30hrs on Saturday (May 12) at the Ocean View Hotel on the Rupert Craig Highway, East Coast Demerara. They will proceed to the Mahaicony bridge before returning to the point of origin for the finish.
Among the cyclists who will be competing is the in-form Team Coco’s Jamual John, Evolution’s Paul DeNobrega, GDF’s Alanzo Ambrose and Trojan PSL’s Curtis Dey, who is competing in his first year as a senior cyclist. Among the ‘young guns’ who will be looking to cop top honours will be United’s Briton John and Adealie Hodge.
Later on in the day at 14:00hrs, the cyclists will line up once more for the second stage from the National Sports Commission on Homestretch Avenue. They will head west along Homestretch Avenue to Vlissengen Road before turning south along the latter, and then east into Hadfield Street and west once more unto Mandela Avenue to complete a circuit; they will have to complete 20 laps.
On Sunday, the third and final stage of the race will see the cyclists riding twenty laps around the outer circuit of the National Park (Thomas Lands, Irving Street, Carifesta Avenue and Camp Road).
According to organisers of the event, the club is hoping to make it an annual event. There will be trophies along with cash incentives for the top six senior cyclists, top three veterans (U-45) and the top three junior cyclists.
