Fire at Cotton Tree WCB leaves six homeless

SIX people were left homeless and two of them hospitalized after a fire of unknown origin destroyed their home at Lot 28 Cotton Tree Village, West Coast Berbice (WCB) around 1:00 am yesterday morning.

Homeless is the Jairam family comprising Mr Jairam, 49, his wife Rajmattie Jairam 44 and four children. The family was asleep when the fire broke out and they barely managed to escape from the burning house by jumping to the ground through a window in the upper flat. They all sustained injuries to their hands and legs.

Jairam’s wife, Rajmattie Jairam and her 19-year-old daughter, Kumarie Jairam, were up to last night patients at the Fort Wellington Hospital nursing burns about their bodies while the others were treated and sent away. The family was unable to save any belongings.
Residents said that a prompt response by the fire service at Onverwagt, WCB, was unable to save the two-storeyed wooden building but they managed to prevent the flames from spreading to other houses in the area. The police in WCB and officials of the fire service were yesterday investigating the possible origins of the blaze.
