MINISTER of Social Protection, Amna Ally, told residents of Leguan that the government is proud of contributions made by the descendants of Indians to national development and highlighted the importance of social cohesion.
The minister was speaking at a ceremony marking the commemoration of Arrival Day on the island of Leguan, which held a grand cultural celebration. Also in attendance were Minister within the Ministry of Finance Jaipaul Sharma, senior officials of the region and special invitees.
In her remarks, Minister Ally saluted the contributions of Indians and urged residents to put aside class, religion and political perspectives and unite as a plural society for the equitable development of the nation. She reminded those present of the government’s commitment to all the nation’s people and applauded the residents for their continued support.

“The history of any country teaches us that it is the spirit of community development that is often crucial to preserving our heritage and thus shaping our positive values and policies
as a nation,” she said.
Minister Ally told the residents that as Guyanese, we should stand together, proud of our forefathers, who through their struggles bequeathed this land to all.
“So as we join today to commemorate the arrival of our Indian ancestors, we must endeavour to recommit to work together, so that we can achieve political stability, national unity and social and economic progress,” Minister Ally also stated.
She noted that the government has committed to major capital projects in Leguan, inclusive of the refurbishing of the island’s stelling which will aid in the enhancement of the economic development of Guyana.
