32 fatal accidents since January

SOME 32 persons have died in a total of 259 accidents since the start of this year, the Guyana Police Force has reported in a statement on Saturday.

According to the statement, of the 32 killed, one included a child and 85 of the accidents occurred were deemed serious, an increase from the 72 recorded during the same period last year.

Acting Commissioner of Police David Ramnarine and his top officers on Friday met with divisional traffic heads, other officers and inspectors to review the current traffic situation, particularly regarding road traffic fatalities and the contributing factors.
Ramnarine and his team made it very clear that the Guyana Police Force Traffic Department must immediately enhance the education of road users and enforcement of the traffic laws.

The Traffic personnel benefitted from an analysis of the traffic situation, particularly fatal accidents by the Police Policy Analyst, using the fatal accident statistics over a number of years.

During this spatial and temporal analysis, the effective utilisation of human and other resources in pursuance of road safety was reviewed. Several other areas which needed immediate focus were deliberated, the statement said.
